Blank canvas – that’s what kids basically are. When they are brought into this world, they don’t have an idea of how things go, hence, the idea of nature and nurture.

Because they technically are a blank slate, they learn everything from their environment and, more importantly, from their parents, whose actions greatly impact the children. However, as crucial as that is, what the mother and father say to the kids really matter to their growth, so here are some things to avoid telling them:

On Money

Kids tend to be persistent in wanting to get what they want – a common sight in toy stores or grocery shops. However, it is not right to say that you will never afford something, an excuse that is usually heard from parents.

Instead of saying this, you can reveal to your child your long-term financial plans, like buying a house or a car. Or, if they insist on going on a trip, simply explain that it’s not part of the year’s allowance, that way, you can help them learn how to save up for it (in the long run, you’re teaching them the value of money and the essence of priorities).

On Job

It is quite normal to vent out your frustrations about work when you go home, and although you won’t tell your child about it, the little ones usually hear conversations like this. According to research, parents’ attitude largely affects how the younger ones succeed in life.

Plus, if you always complain, your kids will have the impression that getting a job is not fun and they are bound to be stuck in the same situation, too. When they grow up, they already have a prejudice about working and so, this could affect their decision-making in career.

On Chores

Saying that you have to do this or that implies that you are compelled to do the task. The best thing to do is to show your kids that you know how to handle time and balance your priorities.

For example, in lieu of saying you have to visit Grandma, you may say that even though you are busy, you will still find time to go to her place because you made a promise. This way, you’re teaching them the importance of responsibility.

However, in cases such as eating vegetables, it is a must. What you can do is to explain why it needs to be done so that they can understand that what you’re doing is for their own good.
